Everything You Need To Know About CBD Oil

If you’re at all interested in the world of natural remedies, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about CBD oil. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a non-intoxicating extract from the cannabis plant and is credited for treating a number of medical issues, such as pain, anxiety and inflammation.

But despite all of the widespread attention it’s getting, is CBD really worth the hype? In short—yes. To learn more about why, here’s everything you need to know about CBD and what it can do for you:

How CBD works

To understand how CBD works, it’s important to understand the Endocannabinoid System and how it affects homeostasis.

Homeostasis is responsible for inner balance within your body, both physiologically and psychologically. When this balance is disrupted and something is off—such as pH levels, temperature, etc.—your body activates the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) to fix it. Your body does this by sending molecules called endocannabinoids to ECS receptors found in select tissues. Once stimulated by the endocannabinoids, the ECS then works its magic to bring everything back into balance.

CBD is a cannabinoid that functions the same as the body’s naturally occuring endocannabinoids. To help clarify, think of ECS receptors as locks. The default keys for these locks are endocannabinoids, but cannabinoids are the “picklock” keys. Although they aren’t produced by the body, they still fit into the locks to stimulate activity of the ECS, and thus support homeostasis.

Benefits of CBD

Because CBD activates your body’s ECS, it can help regulate many important functions. This includes:

  1. Appetite

  2. Digestion

  3. Immune function

  4. Inflammation

  5. Mood

  6. Sleep

  7. Reproduction/fertility

  8. Motor control

  9. Temperature regulation

  10. Memory

  11. Pain

  12. Pleasure/reward

My experience with CBD

I’ve seen nothing but benefits since introducing CBD into my life. Most notably, I’ve found that it significantly eases my stress and anxiety. I’ve also seen my patients benefit from CBD to aid in recovery—particularly athletic-recovery.

In golfers for example, the repetitive movements needed to play can lead to joint inflammation, pinched nerves and general aches and pains. Since CBD helps regulate immune function, it helps reduce this resulting pain and inflammation. Golfers can even use CBD before a game or practice, as it helps them stay relaxed to play their best.

Buying CBD for yourself

When choosing a CBD product, look for brands that have been tested for consistency and verified as free of mold, bacteria, pesticides and other contaminants. It’s also important to look for products with quality ingredients. Stay away from anything with corn syrup, GMOs, trans fats or artificial additives.

In addition, you will want a “full spectrum” oil instead of an “isolate,” which is determined by the extraction process. Full spectrum or whole plant CBD describes a product that uses the full hemp plant, including its rich terpness, secondary cannabinoids and fatty acids. A CBD isolate is purified CBD that strips out other cannabinoids, terpness and fatty acids, which degrades its synergistic qualities. For that reason, single isolate CBD is not nearly as effective as full spectrum/whole plant CBD.

As far as dosing, CBD is not psychoactive like THC, so high doses are completely safe and sometimes necessary. However, lower doses can be just as effective. It’s all about preference.
